Dimitri Payet signs!

West Ham United are delighted to confirm the signing of the exceptional France international Dimitri Payet.

The outstanding 28-year-old joins the Hammers on a five-year contract, with a further one-year option, for an undisclosed eight-figure fee from French Ligue 1 side Olympique de Marseille.

Blessed with superlative technical skills, exceptional vision and an inventive range of passing, Payet operates to great effect from his preferred central attacking midfield position, and is sure to add eye-catching flair and creativity to Slaven Bilic’s side.

Payet, who becomes West Ham’s third senior summer signing following the captures of Spanish midfielder Pedro Obiang and Republic of Ireland goalkeeper Darren Randolph, is looking forward to bringing his formidable talent to the Barclays Premier League.

Payet said the Club's determination to bring him to east London played a huge part in him deciding to end his hugely successful spell in French football.

The player spoke to Joint-Chairmen David Sullivan and David Gold and new manager Slaven Bilic before putting pen to paper on his West Ham contract.

“West Ham really showed me that they wanted me to come, both the Joint-Chairmen and the manager," Poyet told whufc.com. "That’s very important for me. I was also keen to sign up to a clear project. West Ham’s is very interesting and matches perfectly with my ambitions.

“Firstly I spoke with the manager, who really wished for me to come here and had been watching me a lot. He made it clear that he wanted me to sign and that too was important in my choice.

“I’m an attacking footballer so for sure I like attacking football and that they’re counting on me to help achieve that gives me a sense of responsibility. The fact that I’m here is also down to that.

“I’m very happy to be here. It’s true that it’s taken a little while but that’s normal, negotiations are like that. But now that it’s done, I’m very happy."

A top-class player, Payet made more successful through balls than any player in Europe’s top five leagues last season, bar Barcelona star Lionel Messi, and chalked up a phenomenal 17 assists in 36 league appearances for Marseille.

With seven goals to his name too, it is clear the 5’9 player possesses the rare ability to both cut defences apart with his passing, and exploit the spaces created with his finishing.

It is a further mark of Payet’s influence on the game that he has recorded 51 assists over the past six Ligue 1 seasons with Saint-Etienne, Lille and Marseille.

Born on the French island of Reunion in the Indian Ocean, the Hammers new boy began his career playing for local clubs Saint-Philippe and Saint-Pierroise before moving to metropolitan France to join Le Havre at the age of 12 in 1999.

After returning to Reunion for a two-year spell with AS Excelsior, the 18-year-old Payet moved to Ligue 1 side Nantes in 2005 and made his first-team debut against Bordeaux in December of that year.

Payet scored on his first professional start against Lille in September 2006, but Nantes were relegated at the season’s end and the midfielder remained in Ligue 1 by joining Saint-Etienne. There, he helped Les Verts to qualify for the UEFA Cup, scoring on his European debut against Hapoel Tel Aviv in September 2008.

As he continued to mature, Payet’s influence grew. He scored a career-best 13 goals in 2010/11 to earn a senior France debut in a 2-0 Euro 2012 qualifying win over Romania, during which he laid on his country’s second goal.

That form also saw the midfielder catch the eye of French champions Lille, and he linked up with West Ham great Joe Cole and Belgium star Eden Hazard at Les Dogues in summer 2011.

Payet played UEFA Champions League football with Lille, enjoying one of the best seasons of his career in 2012/13, when he totalled 12 goals and 13 assists and appeared in all 38 Ligue 1 matches.

Marseille spent a reported €11m to take the player to France’s second-largest city in summer 2013, and he has continued to impress regularly over the past two years, recording 15 goals and 21 assists in 71 league appearances for L’OM.

In total, Payet has netted 60 goals in 332 club appearances.

Payet’s abilities have seen him capped 15 times by France, scoring once, in a friendly international against Belgium in Paris last month.

Dimitri Payet has got West Ham fans dreaming of the top four

West Ham have a lot of reasons to be happy at the moment.

A new stadium is hoving into view, bringing with it a stack of cash as well as prestige; their manager is beloved by the fans and looks good in a Beanie hat; and they boast an over-performing squad which has the Champions League locked in its sights.

And the jewel set into the heart of that squad is the most precious asset of all - Dimitri Payet. The Frenchman has been a sensation all season, but his performance in helping West Ham come back from a 2-0 deficit for the first time in the Premier League since 2000 to move within a point of the top four demanded a whole new set of superlatives.

His first major contribution to that victory was a whipped cross from wide on the right, the ball curling round a defender and into that bit of the box in which strikers love to lurk. Diafra Sakho obliged and headed home the equaliser. Only Mesut Ozil and Christian Eriksen have created more chances than Payet this season, despite the midfielder missing nearly three months of the season with an ankle injury.

Nine minutes later Payet completed the comeback himself, reading the path of the ball from a header and popping up in the perfect position to shoot past Joel.

• West Ham will use Dimitri Payet to land Michy Batshuayi

“He does things on the pitch that are lifting you out of your seat,” says Slaven Bilic about his star player, signed from Marseille for £10.5million in the summer. “He is a goalscorer, a very attractive player. He excites you with the way he is playing. This is what football is all about”.

Payet's season has been astonishing. It can take some players an entire year to adjust to the demands of the Premier League but Payet barely broke stride the minute he stepped on an English pitch. One of his first touches for West Ham in the opening game of the season against Arsenal involved chasing a long Mark Noble ball out to the left, controlling at speed and using his head, literally and metaphorically, to keep it in play and cross to the front post.

It was an impressive bit of skill but one necessary to keep the ball alive: Payet doesn’t do tricks for the sake of it, everything is done with purpose. Bellerin was beaten and Petr Cech was forced to gather in his six-yard area. Although Arsenal defended the danger this time, Payet had set a marker.

The first imprint he left in the Premier League record books was an assist from that wicked, long free-kick which deceived Petr Cech and resulted in West Ham’s opening goal of the season, Kouyate heading into an open net.

People even questioned Cech’s ability as a goalkeeper after that one, but the whip and curl on Payet’s set piece made things very difficult for him - in terms of set-pieces from that part of the pitch, it was perfect. You would do well to name another time that Cech has committed such a high-profile error.

In terms of where the statistics really matter, Payet has assisted seven and scored eight goals this season – more than any other West Ham player in both departments. Bilic has not exactlyconstructed a one-man team, but without him a top-four finish would surely be inconceivable.

After Payet was injured against Everton in October, West Ham won only one of their next seven games, drawing with a dreadful Swansea and an even worse Aston Villa.

Not coincidentally, they rediscovered their form immediately after Payet returned to the starting line-up – a 3-1 win away to Bournemouth was entirely inspired by Payet magic – and have now won five of their last nine league games.

He creates an average of 3.9 chances per match, second only to Ozil, in a team without the superstars of Arsenal. With Payet in the team Sakho becomes a real threat in the box, likewise Andy Carroll – and even Michail Antonio has been impressive.

It is not because these players are performing out of their skin or even particularly on-form. Payet just makes them better. His ability to find them in the box means that any sort of clever run into the box is usually rewarded with a delivery that can be turned into a goal.

Now that absolutely everyone is aware of what he can do, teams tend to double up on Payet in an attempt to mark him out of the game but he solves that by roaming from his position, usually on the left or just behind the striker, dropping deep and picking up the ball. Opposition players do not know who’s supposed to go and tackle him and before they know it, he’s already found a team-mate with an incisive through-ball. Only certain players are gifted creative freedom – Payet practically demands it.

His vision for a pass is phenomenal. In his last season at Marseille he created more chances than any other player in Europe, and that includes Lionel Messi. But the best thing about Payet, more than the consistent assists and key contributions he provides, is that he genuinely gets fans out of their seats.

Whether it is the brilliant free-kick against Bournemouth, hit with power into the top corner:

Or the way he spots the run, charges in ahead of his marker to receive a through-ball at pace and confidently dinks it over the helpless goalkeeper against Crystal Palace, he’s just really, really entertaining.

Didier Deschamps doesn’t seem to like Payet, perhaps unwilling to chance the player’s former reputation as a bit of a trouble-maker upsetting the harmony of his squad, and he seems unlikely to be part of Euro 2016. Payet himself says it is an “injustice” that he continues to be excluded from his national team.

“All I can say is that if France have in those positions, four, five maybe even six better options than Dimitri,” Slaven Bilic said, “They’re going to win the Euros easy. This guy can play in any team in the world.”

Re: Dimitri Payet Signed
He has had a little bit of rough past and we have given him a chance; that and made him the man, Whether that is the club or the manager or the fans, he seems to appreciate that. Bit of ego there but that is okay if it keeps him here and producing.

If he goes somewhere really big he will be a cog in the machine, a very well oiled machine maybe but a cog. He likes the attention in a good way.

Re: Dimitri Payet Signed
The way he's playing we are sure to have interest from a lot of top drawer teams in the summer. I'm hoping he won't be tempted and he does genuinely appear to be enjoying his football and his time with us.

With all the changes last summer with the new manager and new players I'm not sure anyone could have predicted it would have gone this well. So many highlights this season already. Payet and Lanzini are a dream to watch. An absolute dream.

As for Bilic, what can you say? He seems to have a bit of everything in his locker. Most of all, he commands respect.

Re: Dimitri Payet Signed
He's just signed a new deal, and you can see how much he loves being here, bowing to us at the end of the game. I think he loves us as much as we love him.

He's too old for Arsenal/Man City to want to spend serious cash on him, cause that's what we'd want.

Whatever is keeping him out the French squad is ludicrous, they can't have many better attacking midfielders than him surely, especially the way he is performing in a top league now.

Re: Dimitri Payet Signed
I think he's priceless but if he did go it'd have to be silly money to get anywhere near signing him, especially now he's on the new contract, and if a team pays massive dough we can then sign three or four more good players

for me, he's going nowhere

he had to put on a show though after he turned his back allowing their man in to score....Antonio too. The pair of them had to hold their hands up and take a lot of blame, even if it was a tidy finish.

Both utterly forgiven by the final whistle.
